Biography
The Union was established in 1964 as a not-for-profit, non-government, non-political, professional association with mandate to assist the development of broadcasting in the region. ABU promotes the collective interests of television and radio broadcasters as well as key industry players and facilitate regional and international media co-operation.
The ABU serves more than half of the world’s population as the biggest global broadcasting union. Established in 1964 as a not-for-profit, non-government, non-political, professional association of broadcasters and broadcast media players, the ABU has become a media powerhouse in the most dynamic region in the world.
ABU’s membership footprint covers around 70 countries and regions on five continents. The Union serves its diverse 250 members with tailored capacity-building in news, sports, programming and technology.
With a mission to assist all members, the ABU provides rights-free content acquisition for developing countries, negotiates rights for major sports events and organises coverage for the region. ABU facilitates high-quality co-productions between members bringing together the talent of Asia and the Pacific.
